RESCUE AND TREATMENT OF STRAY ANIMALS
Although domestic and stray animals are not a part of Natural ecosystems, our team has to perform their rescue operations occasionally. These animals usually suffer either from abuse or negligence by their owners.
Moreover, growing number of stray cats and dogs in human settlements is usually a result of failed animal birth control programs run by government. They sometimes pose a serious threat to humans as well as surrounding wildlife. Uncontrolled population of stray dogs leads to the formation their packs which stimulate their wild instincts. Such packs may attack humans, other stray or domestic animals and wildlife surrounding human settlement. Hence, we usually encourage the adoption of stray animal babies and promote animal birth control programs in order to reduce the population of stray animals. Such animals are also rescued whenever they are in trouble and are provided medical treatment, if necessary.
STRAY CATTLE
Stray cattle such as cows and buffaloes suffer severe gastrointestinal disorders due to wrong diet. Polythene plastic bags are used for carrying food and then discarded in the garbage bin. These bags smell like food and are often mistaken by cattle for actual food and eaten by them. It leads to serious health issues in the long run. Such animals require medical treatment. Some of them even need surgery when heaps of plastic gets accumulated in their intestines. Cattle also sustain injuries in road traffic accidents.
PUPPIES
The “Happy Ending” story of four angels is fascinating. Five abandoned, orphaned puppies were salvaged. They suffered severe infections, dehydration and starvation. Despite all the efforts, one of the puppies died but the remaining four survived due to continuous medical treatment, multiple surgeries and nursing for almost 2 months. The puppies were later handed over to an NGO, Animal Rahat. They were finally adopted for lifetime by Paul and Nancy, one of the founders of world renowned music band, the ‘Beetles’. We frequently rescue such orphaned puppies and promote their adoption.
ENTRAPMENT IN TAR
Stray animals like dog pups and cats often get trapped in the tar discarded by road construction workers. Such rescue operations are very difficult and time consuming.
ENTRAPMENT IN SEWER
Open sewers are commonly found in the developing countries. They are dangerous for humans as well as stray animals. Stray dog puppies and cats often fall in open sewers and need to be rescued.
ABANDONED PETS
People often prefer exotic dog and cat breeds over country breeds as pets. However, keeping an exotic pet is expensive. Also, they have low immunity levels as compared to country breeds. Therefore, many owners abandon the exotic pets once the expenses become unbearable. Such pets are rescued, provided medical treatment if necessary and attempts are made for their re-adoption.
KITTENS
Stray kittens usually suffer dehydration, starvation and gut disorders caused by eating discarded polythene bags which are used to carry food and smell like food. Such kittens are rescued and medically treated. Cats have an inherited tendency to hunt wildlife even if they are well fed by their owners. That’s why they are a hazard for small wild animals and birds. We usually encourage adoption of kittens to reduce the number of feral cats.
WORKING ANIMALS
Working animals like donkeys are forced to do laborious work in the day and are set free to scavenge the food on their own in the night. They are frequently attacked by the gangs of stray dogs and later succumb to the injuries because of their owner’s negligence. Such animals are rescued and provided the medical treatment, whenever necessary.
HORSES
In India, horses are bought at a cheap price and used for local horse racing. They are often fed by their owners with the wrong diet like rice, stale bread etc. Eventually, they are abandoned by owners to survive on their own once they suffer gut disorders. Some owners suture the vaginas of female horses with copper wires in order to prevent them from mating. Such horses need salvation and rehabilitation. Our rescuers also try to stop such cruel practices by taking legal action, whenever necessary.
DOMESTIC CATTLE
Domestic Cattle in Sangli district of Maharashtra suffer from various diseases during devastating floods of Krishna river. Special veterinary health check-up camps are arranged for such animals. They are provided medical treatment for waterborne pathogenic infections.
SMALL DOMESTIC LIVESTOCK
Small domestic livestock like goats also get infected with various pathogens during floods. They are vaccinated and provided with other medical treatment as per requirement, in the special veterinary health check-up camps.
